Although the signs of type 1 and type 2 diabetes can differ, there are some common symptoms that should definitely be taken seriously:
1. Constant thirst (polydipsia)
When your body has too much sugar in your blood, it tries to excrete it through urine. This leads to fluid loss and intense thirst.
2. Frequent urination (polyuria)
A classic warning sign: those affected have to go to the toilet several times during the night.
3. Unexplained weight loss
Especially in type 1 diabetes, sudden, severe weight loss occurs, even if you eat normally or even more.
4. Extreme fatigue
Because the body’s cells can’t absorb the sugar properly, energy is lacking. This leads to tiredness, listlessness, and exhaustion.
5. Blurred vision
High blood sugar levels change the fluid balance in the eye and temporarily impair vision.
6. Frequent infections
Fungal infections, urinary tract infections, or poorly healing wounds can be a sign of diabetes.
7. Tingling and numbness
Nerve damage (neuropathies) is noticeable through tingling in the hands and feet.
Non-specific but important signs
Many symptoms are not immediately obvious and can be confused with other conditions. These include:
Night sweats
Headaches and dizziness
Difficulty concentrating
Dry skin and itching
Risk factors for diabetes
Certain factors increase the likelihood of developing type 2 diabetes:
Obesity (especially belly fat)
Lack of exercise
