Many seniors don’t realize that the way they sleep can have a serious impact on their health — especially when it comes to the risk of stroke. While sleep is essential for recovery and brain health, certain positions can actually restrict blood flow and increase pressure in the neck and head.
The Dangerous Position
Sleeping flat on your back with your head tilted too high or too low can reduce blood circulation to the brain. This position may also increase pressure on the arteries that supply blood to the brain, making it harder for oxygen to flow freely. Over time, poor circulation during sleep may contribute to a higher risk of stroke — particularly in older adults with high blood pressure or diabetes.
Side Sleeping Is Safer
Experts suggest that sleeping on your side — especially the left side — can help promote better blood flow and reduce pressure on the neck arteries. This position also helps prevent snoring and sleep apnea, both of which are known to increase stroke risk if left untreated.
