The rubber seal on your refrigerator door performs an essential function: maintaining a tight seal to prevent cold air from escaping. However, when cleaning the appliance, many people focus only on the food compartments and neglect the seal. With prolonged use, dirt accumulates in its folds and mold can even develop, affecting both hygiene and aesthetics.
Below, I share several effective methods for cleaning your refrigerator’s rubber seal and keeping it in perfect condition.
1. Clean with vinegar
Mix water and vinegar in a 1:5 ratio and add a few drops of regular detergent.
I dipped an old toothbrush in the solution and scrubbed the rubber well to remove dirt and mold stains.
Then, wipe with a clean, dry cloth to remove any moisture.
If the dirt is in the smaller creases, wrap a card (such as an ATM card) in kitchen paper and slide it between the grooves to remove the dirt more easily.
2. Clean with baking soda
Baking soda is another ally against accumulated dirt.
Prepare a paste by mixing baking soda with vinegar or lemon juice.
Apply the mixture to the rubber with a toothbrush and scrub until the dirt disappears.
Finally, dry with a clean cloth.
As with the previous method, you can use a card wrapped in paper to access deeper crevices.
3. Clean with white alcohol
White alcohol is ideal for disinfecting and removing mold.
