Holding Cloves in Your Mouth: A Natural Way to Relieve Toothache

How to Use Whole Cloves for Toothache Relief

If you don’t have clove oil at home, whole cloves can still do the job effectively. Here’s how to use them safely:

  1. Take 2–5 whole cloves.
Choose firm, unbroken cloves for best results.
  2. Place them near the painful tooth.
You can hold them between your cheek and gum or next to the sore area.
  3. Suck on them gently.
This releases the natural clove oil slowly into your mouth.
  4. Chew them lightly once they soften.
Gently crushing them with your teeth helps release more of the active compounds.
  5. Keep them in for 10–15 minutes.
You should start feeling mild numbness and relief within a few minutes.
  6. Spit them out and rinse with warm water.
This removes any residue and refreshes the mouth.

You can repeat this process two or three times a day, depending on how severe the pain is.

Homemade Clove Oil Remedy

If you prefer a stronger and more targeted approach, you can easily make a homemade clove oil treatment:

Ingredients:

  • 2 tablespoons of olive or coconut oil
  • 1 teaspoon of ground cloves (or 4–5 crushed whole cloves)

Preparation:

  1. Mix the cloves with the oil in a small glass jar.
  2. Let it sit for 24 hours, then strain out the solids.
  3. Dip a cotton ball into the oil and gently press it against the painful tooth or gum for about 5–10 minutes.
  4. Rinse your mouth afterward with warm water.

This simple mixture can be stored for several weeks in a sealed container and used whenever needed for quick relief.
