First reflex to adopt: completely empty your trash can. Then pour boiling water over it, enough to flood the bottom well. This extreme heat eliminates maggots quickly. To remove them safely, pour the water down the sink while using a strainer or filter to capture the residue.
To reinforce the action, add a few drops of dishwashing liquid to new hot water, then scrub the walls using a scouring brush. Once clean, let the trash can air dry, ideally in direct sunlight. Humidity is the best ally from these little creatures, then we eliminate it!
